Arterial border zone ("watershed") infarcts, coronal section through basal ganglia
Watershed infarction preferentially occurs at the interface between major cerebral artery circulations and in end artery territories, such as those supplied by the penetrating (in this case, lenticulostriate) arteries. Hemorrhagic transformation occurs upon reperfusion, and must be distinguished from hypertensive hemorrhage within the basal ganglia.
